Can you DIE from Crohns or Colitis or Can Inflammatory Bowel Diseases be fatal? YES, IBD’s can indeed kill you. You are not fated a death sentence when you are diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis. IBD’s are usually life long degenerative diseases that negatively impact your quality of life. Most deaths that involve IBD’s are due to complications of the disease, long term toxicity of medications, or no more tissue left to to reconnect.
What is the life expectancy for a person with Crohns or Colitis
Research shows that IBD’s don’t shorten your lifespan but rather affect the quality of your life. You get to live a normal life span with a crappy quality of life. If your like me you’d probably take quality over quantity.
When I was diagnosed the doctor told me about how bad the disease is and the crappy things that I had to look forward to. I’d be unable to have kids, expect countless operations, and that I had a good chance getting colon cancer.
Are You Scared?
Being diagnosed with this crappy disease can make you feel horrible and hopeless. Before you get yourself too worried you must realize never has it been such a good time to get diagnosed with an IBD. More people are overcoming their diseases using a multitude of strategies, diets, and supplements. If you think I’m pulling your chain go search “how I overcame my Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis”. You will find countless stories of people who were just like you: sick and tired of being sick and tired. They made changes to their lifestyles and are now living better lives than they ever could have imagined.
A Needed Lesson
This disease has taught me a lesson about how fragile life can be and made me think about what actually matters. Sometimes we get caught up in life worrying about things that don’t matter like impressing people, buying materialistic crap, or having unrealistic expectations of our physical appearances. Beating this disease showed me that I’m capable of anything! I’ve learned that I care about free time, relationships, and experiences. I would not take back getting diagnosed because this disease has changed my life in so many amazing ways. Bullshit! your thinking.. but remember this when you finally beat this disease. Your perspective on life will change, you will be grateful, you will value people, and you will value your health.
I look back at the way I treated my body 5-7 years before I was diagnosed and it was brutal. It took getting a degenerative disease to make me change my habits. If you feel hopeless right now, please realize that you can beat this disease. Not only can you beat the disease but you can achieve optimal health in the process.
