How to Prep for a Colonoscopy and avoid the mistakes I made

I know you are reading this article because you are probably preparing to have a colonoscopy done and you might be a little scared. I’m not trying to convince you against getting your initial colonoscopy but rather helping you learn How to Prep for a Colonoscopy and avoid the mistakes I made that caused me lots of pain and suffering.

Who in the world would ever want to go through the experience of getting a colonoscopy? To call it invasive would be an absolute understatement. Colonoscopies can negatively affect your health forcing your health to spiral out of control.  I will show you how to avoid these consequences, and help you heal your gut from this procedure.

Colonoscopies are commonly used to identify and diagnose many digestive diseases, or to screen for colon cancer at age 50. colonoscopy risks and complications are said to be fairly low but can include: perforation (hole in intestine), bleeding, reaction to anesthetics, or possible infection.

The real DANGER when getting a Colonoscopy

Is the effect it has on your gut microbiome.  Your doctor has given you prep instructions such as no solid food from the night before until after the procedure, and take tablets or drink a mixture. These tablets make you flush your bowels so they are empty for the procedure. Flushing the gut like this gets rid of most the good bacteria in your gut. It leaves it susceptible for opportunistic and bad bacteria to completely take over. This is the equivalent of spraying your entire lawn with roundup and wondering what will grow back first. Without a doubt it will be weeds! If this happens it can flip the ratio of good bacteria to bad bacteria leaving you sick.

I went for my first colonoscopy as I thought I had the early stages of an Inflammatory Bowel Disease and I wanted confirmation. I had experienced multiple symptoms of the disease but never experienced a flare up. Within a few days of my colonoscopy I had my first and most severe flare up I ever experienced.  I thought this might just be a coincidence but over the years I spoke with people who also had their first severe gut issues or flare ups after their first colonoscopy. I recently found a medical report showing that colonoscopies can induce colitis.

How to make a GREAT recovery from a COLONOSCOPY!

Since you are getting rid of lots of good bacteria you want to make sure you replenish it to the best of your ability. You can do this by taking a quality probiotic after the procedure and for no less than 30 days afterwards. Take 1 capsule after you get home from the procedure and then 1 every night before bed until you are done the months supply. I recommend Ultimate Flora by Renew Life You can also get good bacteria into your body by consuming foods like:

  • Sauerkraut or other fermented veggies.. (homemade are always best)
  • Yogurt, and kefir (homemade only)

I wish my doctor would have told me this stuff as it would have saved me lots of time and pain recovering.

Here are some other great things that can help you recover from your Colonoscopy

  • Try not to eat solid foods right away to give your gut time to heal
  • Enjoy soups and bone broths
  • Take a Gelatin or Collagen supplement to help heal and repair the gut tissue
  • Take L-Glutamine to help grow repair the enterocytes in your gut
